Marble Or Granite?

When deciding between two high-quality natural products such as marble and granite, it’s important to consider the look you want to achieve, and the ongoing maintenance involved with owning such a product. Starstone Design can help you make the right choice your home or business during our consultation. Although we can support and guide you with your decision-making process below you will find some useful information to help guide you at this early stage.
Granite is the strongest of all natural stones. A granite kitchen worktop will be highly resistant to stains and abrasions. This makes it ideal for a busy home or for commercial premises. Granite comes in a variety of colours, including variations of black, grey and a range of earthy tones right through to bright blue. The colour range allows you to find, utilise and create beautiful bathroom designs, and granite can be also used for wall tiles as well as bathroom vanities.
Marble is more porous than Granite but is still hard-wearing and relatively heatproof too. It has the most beautiful, veined patterns and natural features and comes in a huge range of colours and finishes. A marble kitchen worktop or kitchen island or peninsula can create a stunning focal point in even the largest of kitchens. Marble worktops used for kitchens or bathrooms will maintain their appearance for years and years to come. This is because they are resistant to UV light damage unlike most other materials on the market and if treated correctly they will last a lifetime
Both granite and marble need to be sealed regularly to protect them from staining. In order to maintain natural stone in prime condition, it’s essential to consider its physical properties. At Starstone, we seal all natural stone before releasing it, and we apply additional sealant immediately after installation where necessary. However, regular resealing is necessary to maintain the stone’s protection.
When cleaning, use a soft cloth and mild liquid soap to wipe surfaces. Avoid using alkaline and chlorine-based cleaners and never use bleach or abrasive cleaning products like metal pads and scouring detergents.
If there are any spills, clean them up immediately to prevent staining. Some liquids, such as beetroot juice, lemon juice, vinegar, butter, cooking oils, wine, and detergents, pose the greatest risks. Always mop up spilled liquids instead of wiping them into the surface.
In order to avoid damaging the stone surfaces, never expose them to excessive heat. Instead, use a mat to support hot pots and pans. Always use chopping boards to prevent scratches caused by knives and other kitchen utensils.
